  3. The following is a list of the most commonly-asked questions
  4. about Mac OS 7.6.1 Update.

  6. 1.) What is Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?
  7. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is a set of software enhancements that
  8. delivers improvements in stability for Macintosh and Mac
  9. OS-compatible computers running Mac OS 7.6. The Update is
  10. available in 3 different packages: a five floppy disk set
  11. for PowerBook 3400 computers only; a four floppy set for all
  12. computers supported by Mac OS 7.6; and a Mac OS 7.6.1 CD for
  13. recently introduced computers not supported by Mac OS 7.6.
  14. After installing the update, the Mac OS version on the
  15. computer will be Mac OS 7.6.1.
  16.  
  17. 2.) Who should install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?
  18. Apple recommends installing this update on any Macintosh or
  19. Mac OS-compatible computer running Mac OS 7.6. Some newer
  20. PowerBook computers, introduced after Mac OS 7.6, may need
  21. to use a PowerBook specific update. To see if your computer
  22. can use this update, see "How do I Know What Version of
  23. System Software I Have?" below.
  24.  
  25. NOTE: If you have a PowerBook 3400, you cannot install this
  26. update. To upgrade your PowerBook 3400 computer, you must
  27. use Mac OS 7.6.1 Update for PowerBook 3400. Mac OS 7.6.1
  28. Update for PowerBook 3400 will install the same fixes and
  29. updates as the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update.

  31. 3.) How do I know what version of system software I have?
  32. To find out what system software version your computer is
  33. using, follow these steps:
  34.  
  35.  1.  Make sure you are in the Finder. (To switch to the
  36.  Finder, click on the Application menu, marked with an icon
  37.  in the upper-right corner of your screen, and choose
  38.  Finder.)
  39.  
  40.  2.  Select the Apple (*) menu, located at the upper-left
  41.  corner of your screen.
  42.  
  43.  * If the first item in the Apple menu is called About This
  44.  Computer, select it. If you see the word "Enabler" under the
  45.  line that reads "System Software 7.6," you cannot install
  46.  this update. If you see "PowerBook 3400 1.0," then you need
  47.  to download the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update for PowerBook 3400. If
  48.  there is no text between the line that reads "System
  49.  Software 7.6" and the copyright notification, you can
  50.  proceed with the installation.

  52.  * If the first item in the Apple menu is About This
  53.  Macintosh, you have an earlier version of system software.
  54.  You must upgrade to Mac OS 7.6 before you can install this
  55.  update.

  57. 4.) Should I install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update if I do not have
  58. Mac OS 7.6?
  59. You must have Mac OS 7.6 in order to install this software.
  60. If you have a version earlier than Mac OS 7.6, you will need
  61. to purchase it from an Apple reseller, or by calling the
  62. Apple Order Center. In the U.S. call 1-800-293-6617.

  64. IMPORTANT:Do not install this update if you have a Power
  65. Macintosh 4400, 5500, 6500, 7300, 8600, or 9600 (or a
  66. Performa version) series computer. You can obtain Mac OS 7.6
  67. and Mac OS Update 7.6.1 through the Mac OS Up-To-Date

  77. 5.)  Where can I get Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?
  78. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is available electronically for download
  79. from Apple on "Apple SW Updates" via the Internet
  80. (http://www.info.apple.com), America Online (keyword:
  81. AppleComputer), and CompuServe (GO APLSUP). To get a list of
  82. authorized mirror sites on the Internet, visit:

  85. In the U.S., customers also may order the update on floppies
  86. for $10 (+tax and shipping/handling) by calling
  87. 1-800-293-6617. Customers in Canada may call 1-800-361-6075
  88. to order the update for $15 (Canadian) plus shipping and
  89. handling fees. For customers outside the U.S. or Canada,
  90. contact the local Apple support center for further
  91. information.  PowerBook 3400 customers unable to download
  92. the update should call 1-800-500-7078, and have their Apple
  93. Support Card at hand for authorization.

  95. NOTE: If you are running a localized version of Mac OS 7.6,
  96. such as French, German, British, etc., do not install the
  97. U.S. version of 7.6.1 Update. Localized versions of the
  98. Update will be posted within 90 days of the release of the

  104. 6.) Can I get Mac OS 7.6.1 Update on CD?
  105. No. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is available only by download from
  106. the World Wide Web and online services, and on floppy disk
  107. from the Apple Order Center. It is not available on CD.
  108.  
  109. 7.) I heard there is a CD version available, why can't I get
  110. it?
  111. Although Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is not available on CD, a full
  112. version of Mac OS 7.6.1 is available on CD only for
  113. customers who have purchased one of the recently introduced
  114. computers from Apple that does not support Mac OS 7.6. This
  115. includes the Power Macintosh 4400, 5500, 6500, 7300, 8600,
  116. and 9600, and any Performa versions of these computers.
  117. Qualified customers who don't receive a 7.6.1 CD in their
  118. CPU accessory kit can receive Mac OS 7.6.1 for their
  119. computer through the Mac OS Up-To-Date program. For more
  120. information see the Mac OS Up-To-Date Web site at

  122. or in the U.S. and Canada call 800-335-9258.

  124. 8.) Why isn't Open Transport 1.1.2 included in this update?
  125. The goal of Mac OS 7.6.1 Update is to deliver a rapid
  126. response to any stability issues with the core system
  127. software. This update is not intended to deliver any new
  128. features, nor does it deliver updates to technologies
  129. already available through download sites on the Internet and
  130. most online services. Open Transport 1.1.2 was released to
  131. address issues with very specific network configurations of
  132. some large customers, and is not required for most Open
  133. Transport users. Customers who require a version of Open
  134. Transport later than 1.1.1 can choose to download and
  135. install it separately.
  136.  
  137. IMPORTANT: Because OT 1.1.2 was released before the
  138. PowerBook 3400,  some of the resources in OT 1.1.2 are older
  139. than what is required for the PowerBook 3400. Customers with
  140. a PowerBook 3400 computer who require OT 1.1.2 need to
  141. follow a specific installation order to ensure
  142. compatibility. After installing OT 1.1.2 on a PowerBook
  143. 3400, customers must immediately install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update
  144. for PowerBook 3400. This will update the appropriate
  145. localtalk resources. Problems with older resources are
  146. evident when switching between Infrared and LocalTalk. If
  147. you experience problems when switching networks, you should
  148. reinstall the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update.
  149.  
  150. 9.) Can I use Connectix Speed Doubler with Mac OS 7.6.1?
  151. There is a problem using Connectix Speed Doubler versions
  152. 1.3.1 and earlier and version 2.0 with Mac OS 7.6 and Mac OS
  153. 7.6.1. If you have one of these Speed Doubler versions
  154. installed, the Speed Access extension will be disabled after
  155. you install Mac OS 7.6.1 Update. Connectix is providing a

  160. 10.) I have several machine-specific extensions that I
  161. added, do I still need those?
  162. Besides the fixes provided by Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, several
  163. of the fixes and features previously released as extensions
  164. are now part of the OS. You may notice that these extensions
  165. have been removed from the Extensions folder. After
  166. installing the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update, you will no longer need
  167. these extensions in your Extensions folder, and adding them
  168. after installing the update could cause problems. The
  169. Extensions no longer needed are:

  183. 11.) What improvements does Mac OS 7.6.1 Update deliver?
  184. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update improves the reliability of computers
  185. that use Mac OS 7.6 by delivering the following fixes and
  186. enhancements:
  187.  
  188. * Nearly all Type 11 errors have been eliminated on
  189. computers with PowerPC processors. Type 11 errors force you
  190. to restart the computer without saving your work. Most of
  191. these errors are now properly classified as Type 1 or Type 2
  192. errors, which cause the active application to quit, but do
  193. not force you to restart the computer. Type 11 errors do not
  194. typically occur on computers with 680x0 processors.
  195.  
  196. IMPORTANT : If you get an error that forces a program to
  197. quit, you should save your work in other open applications
  198. and restart the computer.
  199.  
  200. * Type 112 errors, which occurred when using some multimedia
  201. applications, have been eliminated.
  202.  
  203. * An updated CFM-68K Runtime Enabler is included for
  204. computers with 68030 and 68040 processors. Customers with
  205. 68030- and 68040-based computers will benefit from an 
  206. updated CFM-68K Runtime Enabler which allows these computers
  207. to use applications that take advantage of the Code Fragment
  208. Manager (CFM). The CFM-68K Runtime Enabler is a system
  209. extension that allows application programs to share code
  210. resources. Because of a stability problem with this
  211. extension, it was not included with Mac OS 7.6. In order to
  212. ensure system software quality, Mac OS 7.6 will refuse to
  213. load previous versions of the extension if present. All
  214. known stability problems with this extension have been
  215. fixed.
  216.  
  217. Apple products that use the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler include
  218. OpenDoc, Cyberdog, LaserWriter 8.4 and later, Apple Telecom
  219. software 3.0 and later, and the Apple Media Tool.
  220. Application programs from other companies that require the
  221. CFM-68K Runtime Enabler include AOL 3.0 and Internet
  222. Explorer 3.0. (If you continue to experience problems with
  223. non-Apple applications that use the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler,
  224. contact the application developer.)
  225.  
  226. * Compatibility with serial devices for Performa 5400 and
  227. 6400 computers and PowerBook 3400 computers has been
  228. improved. There were problems with these computers not
  229. recognizing serial devices that were connected at startup.
  230. This update fixes this problem.
  231.  
  232. * Infrared problems on PowerBook 1400 and 3400 computers
  233. have been fixed. The computer will no longer freeze if the
  234. infrared window is blocked when the computer is starting up
  235. or transferring files.
  236.  
  237. * Application programs that use QuickTime files work more
  238. reliably when working with large files and when using
  239. QuickTime files in low-memory situations.
  240.  
  241. * Improved print speed is present for some computers using
  242. third party printers over LocalTalk networks, however, Power
  243. Macintosh 5400 and 6400 computers with processor speeds less
  244. than 200 MHz without an L2 cache still exhibit slow
  245. printing. Apple is working on a solution to this problem,
  246. and will post a solution as soon possible online in the same
  247. locations as this update.
  248.  
  249. * Video applications, including the Apple Video Player, now
  250. correctly recognize when MPEG software is installed.
  251.  
  252. * Storage PC Cards no longer require a utility to appear on
  253. the desktop. PC Cards used for storage now automatically
  254. appear on the desktop when inserted.
  255.  
  256. * A low battery message that appeared prematurely on
  257. PowerBooks has been removed. Two low-battery messages are
  258. now displayed, instead of three, before the computer shuts
  259. itself down. The first message appears approximately two to
  260. four minutes before shutdown. The second occurs
  261. approximately ten seconds before shutdown.
  262.  
  263. * Contrast and brightness controls work as expected on
  264. PowerBook 1400 computers. The screen will get brighter or
  265. show more contrast when the plus (+) controls are pressed.
  266. Previously, the functionality of the plus (+) and minus (-)
  267. controls were reversed on PowerBook 1400 computers.
  268.  
  269. * On the PowerBook 3400, the removable CD-ROM drive now
  270. works correctly if it is inserted in the expansion bay while
  271. the computer is on.
  272.  
  273. * A new version of Apple System Profiler now supports
  274. IDE-based CD-ROM drives, such as the built-in CD-ROM drive
  275. for the PowerBook 1400.
  276.  
  277. * A new version of AppleVision software improves reliability
  278. on computers that use AppleVision monitors.
  279.  
  280. * Graphics acceleration software now works correctly with a
  281. universal System Folder.  Additionally, the Graphics
  282. Accelerator extension and the Graphics Accelerator 2
  283. extension have been merged into the ATI Graphics extension.
  284.  
  285. * Improved performance for customers who use video-capture
  286. expansion cards and ATI accelerators. Video capture is
  287. faster on computers using both video-capture PCI expansion
  288. cards and ATI graphics accelerators.
  289.  
  290. * New version of Apple Video Player is installed. On all
  291. computers, the AppleScript scripting language can be used to
  292. automate tasks in Apple Video Player.
  293.  
  294. * Changes made to automatic startup and shutdown settings in
  295. the Energy Saver control panel are now correctly saved.

  297. * Files greater than 1 MB in size are now copied more
  298. reliably between IDE hard disks.

  307. 13.) What tips are there to ensure that I have a more
  308. trouble-free installation of Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?
  309. It is very important to read the "About Mac OS 7.6.1 Update"
  310. document which comes with the update, and carefully follow
  311. the directions for installing Mac OS 7.6.1 Update. In
  312. general, it is best to not to rename or move files around
  313. within your System Folder.  The Mac OS 7.6.1 Update
  314. Installer makes some assumptions that certain files will be
  315. in certain places, and if these files are moved or renamed,
  316. files that Mac OS 7.6.1 Update installs could be placed in
  317. the wrong place, or not installed at all.  If you have
  318. modified you System Folder by renaming or moving files or
  319. folders, you may need to install a clean version of Mac OS
  320. 7.6 before installing Mac OS 7.6.1 Update.
  321.  
  322. 14.) When will Mac OS 7.6.1 Update be available in other
  323. languages beside U.S. English?
  324. Apple expects localized versions of Mac OS 7.6.1 Update to
  325. be available in many countries within 90 days after the U.S.
  326. introduction. Please contact your local Apple support center
  327. for local availability, or check on Apple Software Updates
  328. to see if it has been posted. The latest version of this

  335. 15.) Can I install the U.S. version of Mac OS 7.6.1 Update
  336. on a computer which has a non-U.S. version of the system
  337. software?
  338. No. Apple does not support the installation of this update
  339. on localized systems. If you  are not using a U.S. version
  340. of Mac OS 7.6, please contact your service provider on when
  341. this update is available in your locale.
  342.  
  343. 16.) Why is there no "custom install" and "custom remove"
  344. option for the installer?
  345. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update only updates the existing installed
  346. components on your computer. It does not add functionality.
  347. These updates are necessary to ensure your computer is
  348. operating optimally based on your installed configuration. A
  349. custom install option is only available when an installation
  350. provides new features that you may not wish to install, such
  351. as those found in Mac OS 7.6. Because Mac OS 7.6.1 Update
  352. adds no new features to your computer, the custom install
  353. and custom remove options are not provided.
  354.  
  355. 17.)  Are there any known problems with installing this update?  
  356. Customers are encouraged to read the document which
  357. accompanies the update, titled "About Mac OS 7.6.1 Update."
  358. It has a "known problems" section which documents any issues
  359. you may need to consider before installing the update. There
  360. are some issues that were discovered too late to be included
  361. in the Readme. These are listed below.  Please read this
  362. information before installing Mac OS 7.6.1 Update on your
  363. computer.
  364.  
  365. OPEN TRANSPORT 1.1.2 AND POWERBOOK 3400
  366. Open Transport 1.1.2 and the PowerBook 3400 are not
  367. compatible unless you follow these instructions. Open
  368. Transport 1.1.2 was released to address issues with very
  369. specific network configurations of some customers, and is
  370. not required for most Open Transport users. If you require
  371. version 1.1.2 of Open Transport for your network
  372. configuration, first install Open Transport 1.1.2, and then
  373. immediately install the Mac OS 7.6.1 Update for PowerBook
  374. 3400. This will overwrite resources which otherwise could
  375. cause crashes when switching between Infrared and LocalTalk.
  376.  
  377. POWERBOOK 1400 AND NEWER TECHNOLOGY ETHERNET CARD
  378. A PowerBook 1400 used with the Newer Technology Ethernet
  379. card requires Ethernet driver version 1.5 or later from
  380. Newer Technology. Drivers older than version 1.5 may cause
  381. crashes. Visit Newer Technology's web site for the latest
  382. version: http://newertech.com/software.html, or call their
  383. Tech Support at 1-800-678-3726.
  384.  
  385. INFRARED CONTROL PANEL PRODUCES INCORRECT ERROR
  386. If the Infrared control panel is selected on a computer that
  387. does not have infrared capability, an error -192 message is
  388. displayed. The error should state that Infrared is not
  389. supported on this computer.
  390.  
  391. PRINTING SPEED IMPROVEMENTS
  392. Improved print speed is present for some computers using
  393. third party printers over LocalTalk networks. However, Power
  394. Macintosh 5400 and 6400 computers with processor speeds less
  395. than 200 MHz without an L2 cache still exhibit slow
  396. printing. Apple is working on a solution to this problem,
  397. and will post a solution as soon possible in the same
  398. locations as this update.

  400. 68040 COMPUTERS AND CLOSED CAPTION FEATURE IN APPLE VIDEO PLAYER
  401. Apple Video Player's Closed Caption option will cause a hang
  402. on a 68040 computer with the Apple TV Tuner card installed.
  403. Reinstalling the Apple Video Player (version 1.4) from the
  404. Mac OS 7.6 CD will remedy the problem. To reinstall, launch
  405. "Install System Software" in the Mac OS 7.6 folder within
  406. the Software Installers folder on the Mac OS 7.6 CD.  Choose
  407. "Custom Install" from the pop-up, then click on the triangle
  408. next to the item "Multimedia" to expand it. Select "Apple
  409. Video Player 1.4" and click "Install." When asked if the
  410. "Newer" or "Older" file should be used, select "Older."
  411.  
  412. APPLE VIDEO PLAYER & MAC OS 7.6.1 INCOMPATIBLE WITH
  413. QUICKTIME MPEG CARD
  414. Apple Video Player will not properly recognize a QuickTime
  415. MPEG Card when run under Mac OS 7.6 or Mac OS 7.6.1. With
  416. Mac OS 7.6.1 the QuickTime MPEG extension can be used to
  417. view MPEG files using software decompression with Apple
  418. Video Player.
  419.  
  420. APPLE VIDEO PLAYER 1.6 IS NOT INSTALLED ON POWERBOOK 3400
  421. If you need to use this application program, it can be
  422. downloaded from http://www.info.apple.com.
  423.  
  424. POWER MACINTOSH 7100/80AV AND APPLE VIDEO PLAYER SOUND PROBLEMS
  425. If the sound is muted and the slider doesn't work in Apple
  426. Video Player on a 7100/80AV, open Apple Video Player and
  427. click on the mute button to activate it. Quitting and
  428. relaunching the Apple Video Player should then remedy the
  429. problem.
  430.  
  431. MAC OS 7.6.1 AND APPLEVISION 1710: MISSING COLORSYNC PROFILE
  432. If you try to import the "AppleVision 1710-9300" ColorSync
  433. profile, and the error "Could not complete your request
  434. because a ColorSync error has occurred."  appears, install
  435. AppleVision 1.5.1 to eliminate the problem.
  436.  
  437. EXTENSIONS MANAGER'S MAC OS 7.6.1 SETS OMIT FILE NEEDED TO PRINT
  438. Selecting "Mac OS 7.6.1 Base" and "Mac OS 7.6.1 All" in
  439. Extensions Manager, mistakenly turns off "Printing Lib" and
  440. printing is disabled. Manually turning on "Printing Lib"
  441. within Extensions Manager after choosing one of these sets
  442. will allow printing.
  443.  
  444. EXTENSIONS MANAGER'S MAC OS 7.6.1 SETS OMIT MONITORS CONTROL PANEL
  445. Selecting "Mac OS 7.6.1 Base" and "Mac OS 7.6.1 All" in
  446. Extensions Manager, mistakenly turns off "Monitors" control
  447. panel. Manually turning on "Monitors" within Extensions
  448. Manager after choosing one of these sets will allow access
  449. to this control panel.
  450.  
  451. INTERNAL SPEAKER ON POWER MACINTOSH 5500 AND 6500 REMAIN MUTED
  452. If external speakers are connected to a Power Macintosh 5500
  453. or 6500 when the computer starts up and are then
  454. disconnected, the internal speakers remains muted. Restart
  455. the computer after disconnecting the external speakers and
  456. the internal speaker will work normally.
  457.  
  458. VM IS NOT TURNED ON FOR 68030 & 68040 COMPUTERS WITH MORE THAN 16 MB OF RAM
  459. 68030- and 68040-based Macintosh computers with more than 16
  460. MB of physical memory do not have Virtual Memory turned on
  461. after installing Mac OS 7.6.1 Update.
  462.  
  463. POWER MACINTOSH 5500 and 6500 SCREEN REFRESH PROBLEM WITH MPEG MOVIES
  464. Windows of MPEG movies on Power Macintosh 5500 computers may
  465. exhibit white areas obscuring the movie in the window.
  466. Removing the ATI MPEG extension from the Extensions folder,
  467. or manipulating the movie window will work around the
  468. problem.
  469.  
  470. 18.)  What are the system requirements for Mac OS 7.6.1 Update?  
  471. In order to install the update, you must have Mac OS 7.6
  472. installed. Mac OS 7.6.1 Update cannot be installed if your
  473. system software version is earlier than Mac OS 7.6. It will
  474. support all computers supported by Mac OS 7.6: all Power
  475. Macintosh Computers, all PowerPC computers manufactured by
  476. Mac OS licensees, all 68040, and all 32-bit clean 68030
  477. computers. As with Mac OS 7.6, 16 MB of total memory is
  478. required. At least 8 MB must be physical RAM. Virtual Memory
  479. can be used to reach the required 16 MB.
